Planning your wedding photography is about more than choosing a photographer or deciding how many hours to book. It is about deciding which moments matter most to you and how you want to remember your wedding day.

Some couples dream of an intimate ceremony followed by a relaxed meal with their closest family and friends. Others plan a full day with bridal preparations, a ceremony, cocktails, dinner, speeches and a party that continues late into the night.

So, how many hours of wedding photography do you actually need?

As a wedding photographer working across Girona, the Costa Brava and Barcelona, I recommend starting with your wedding timeline, the moments you want documented and the atmosphere you want to preserve. The right number of hours depends on your plans, not simply on the size of your wedding.

2–4 Hours: An Intimate Wedding or Elopement

If you are planning an elopement, a small civil ceremony or an intimate celebration with just a few guests, you may not need a full day of photography.

Two to four hours can be enough to document the ceremony, capture your emotions and reactions, photograph a few family portraits and enjoy a relaxed couple’s session.

This option works particularly well if you are planning:

  • A civil ceremony followed by a short celebration.
  • An intimate wedding with a small group of guests.
  • A symbolic ceremony or vow renewal.
  • A romantic elopement in a beautiful location on the Costa Brava or in Girona.

For an elopement, the location itself can be an important part of the experience. You might exchange vows overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, explore the streets of a medieval Catalan village or enjoy a quiet moment together by Lake Banyoles.

If you would like to visit several locations, include a longer couple’s session or travel between different places, consider allowing four to six hours instead. Travel time, walking distances and the timing of the ceremony can all affect how much photography coverage you need.

Best for: couples who want to preserve the most meaningful moments of a small celebration without documenting every part of the day.

4 Hours: The Essential Moments of Your Wedding

Four hours of wedding photography can be a great choice if you have a relatively simple schedule and know which parts of the day matter most to you.

For example, your coverage might include the ceremony, congratulations, group photographs, a couple’s session and part of the cocktail reception.

A possible timeline could look like this:

  • Ceremony and guests’ reactions.
  • Congratulations, hugs and confetti.
  • Family and group portraits.
  • A relaxed couple’s session.
  • The beginning of the cocktail reception.

This is a good option for couples who are planning a shorter celebration or who prefer to invest in photographing a few important moments rather than the entire day.

However, four hours usually will not cover everything from getting ready to the evening party. If your ceremony takes place in the afternoon and dinner begins several hours later, you will need to decide which moments you would most like to include.

Best for: a short wedding celebration with a clear schedule and a few priorities.

6 Hours: From the Ceremony to the Reception

Six hours offers more flexibility and allows you to tell a more complete story of your wedding day.

Depending on your schedule, this could include the ceremony, congratulations, family photographs, a couple’s session, cocktails and the beginning of dinner.

It is often a good middle ground for couples who want more than a short ceremony coverage but do not need photography throughout the entire day.

For example, if your ceremony begins at 3 p.m., six hours could take you through the cocktail reception and into the early part of the evening. The exact coverage will depend on the timing of your ceremony, the venue and the events you have planned.

One important consideration is that the ceremony and reception can take longer than expected. If you want time for relaxed portraits without feeling rushed, allow some flexibility in your schedule.

Best for: weddings with a ceremony, a cocktail reception and some of the evening celebrations.

8–10 Hours: A Full Wedding Story

For many couples, eight to ten hours is a comfortable option for documenting most of their wedding day.

This coverage can include the preparations, ceremony, cocktail reception, couple’s portraits, dinner and the beginning of the party. It allows the photographs to tell a story rather than simply record a sequence of events.

You can remember the anticipation while getting ready, the emotions during the ceremony, the atmosphere of the reception, the speeches and the moments you may not have noticed while everything was happening.

An eight-hour package may work well if your schedule is relatively compact. Ten hours can offer more breathing room, particularly if you want photographs of both partners getting ready, have several important events planned or need to travel between locations.

For example, a ten-hour timeline might begin with preparations around noon, continue through an afternoon ceremony and cocktail reception, and finish after dinner or at the start of the party.

The key is to work backwards from the moments you most want photographed and allow enough time for each part of the day.

Best for: couples who want a broad record of their wedding, from preparations through dinner and the beginning of the celebration.

12 Hours: When You Want to Remember the Whole Day

If you want your wedding photographs to tell the story of the day from beginning to end, twelve hours can be an excellent choice.

This is particularly useful for weddings with a detailed schedule, multiple locations, longer preparations or a lively evening celebration.

Depending on your plans, twelve hours may allow time for:

  • Getting ready, including details and candid moments with family and friends.
  • The first look, if you choose to have one.
  • The ceremony and guests’ reactions.
  • Family photographs and couple’s portraits.
  • The cocktail reception, speeches and dinner.
  • The first dances and the beginning of the party.

A longer package also provides more flexibility if the schedule changes slightly or some moments take longer than expected.

Of course, twelve hours does not automatically mean every single moment will be photographed. It is still important to discuss your priorities and agree on a realistic timeline with your photographer.

Best for: full-day weddings with several important stages, multiple locations or celebrations that continue into the evening.

Does the Number of Guests Affect How Many Hours You Need?

Yes, but not in the way you might expect.

A wedding with 20 guests can last all day, while a wedding with 150 guests might have a relatively compact schedule. The guest count alone does not determine how many hours you should book.

However, the number of guests can affect how much time is needed for certain parts of the day.

Family and group photographs: With a larger guest list, organising group photographs may take longer, especially if you want several combinations of family members and friends.

The ceremony and congratulations: A larger number of guests can mean more reactions to photograph, more hugs and more time spent greeting everyone after the ceremony.

Speeches and entertainment: Multiple speeches, performances, traditions or surprises can extend the reception.

The atmosphere of the party: If dancing and spontaneous moments are an important part of your celebration, you may want your photographer to stay beyond dinner.

For a large wedding with several planned events, eight to twelve hours may be appropriate. A smaller wedding may need the same amount of coverage if you want to document preparations, the ceremony, dinner and the party.

The best approach is to plan around your schedule and priorities, rather than choosing a package based only on the number of guests.

What If You Only Want Photographs of the Ceremony?

That is absolutely possible.

If your main priority is documenting the ceremony and taking a few family and couple’s portraits afterwards, a shorter coverage option may be enough.

Before deciding, consider whether you would also like photographs of the anticipation before the ceremony, the reactions of your guests, the congratulations afterwards or the atmosphere of the reception.

These moments often become some of the most meaningful parts of a wedding gallery, even when they are not part of the official schedule.

You do not have to photograph everything. The important thing is to make a conscious choice about what you want to remember.

Should You Include the Getting-Ready Photos?

Getting-ready photographs are not essential for every couple, but they can add a meaningful beginning to your wedding story.

They capture the anticipation, the details you have chosen for the day, the people helping you get ready and those final moments before the ceremony.

If you would like photographs of both partners getting ready, it is worth considering the logistics. If you are preparing at different locations, your photographer will need enough time to travel between them, or you may want to discuss additional coverage.

If preparations are not important to you, there is no reason to include them simply because they are part of a traditional wedding photography package.

What About Couple’s Portraits? How Much Time Should You Allow?

You do not need to spend hours posing to have beautiful wedding portraits.

For many couples, around 20–40 minutes can be a useful starting point for a relaxed session, although the ideal duration depends on the location, light, walking distances and the style of photographs you want.

If your venue has beautiful surroundings, you may not need to go anywhere else. If you dream of photographs by the sea, in a medieval village or among the countryside of Catalonia, you should also allow time to travel to the location.

I believe couple’s portraits should feel like a natural part of the wedding day, not an obligation that takes you away from your guests for too long. The goal is to create photographs that feel like you, while leaving you plenty of time to enjoy the celebration.

How to Choose the Right Wedding Photography Package

Before choosing the number of hours, ask yourselves these questions:

  1. Which moments are most important to us?
  2. Do we want photographs of the preparations?
  3. Are we planning a first look or a separate couple’s session?
  4. Will we be celebrating at one location or travelling between several?
  5. Do we want photographs of dinner, speeches and dancing?
  6. At what point would we feel happy for the photography coverage to end?

Once you have answered these questions, it becomes much easier to choose the right package.

A good wedding photography timeline should give you enough coverage without making the day feel like a photoshoot. It should leave room for genuine moments, unexpected emotions and time to enjoy being together.
