Not every wedding needs a large venue, hundreds of guests or a carefully planned schedule from morning until midnight. Sometimes, all you need is a beautiful place, the person you love and a moment that belongs entirely to the two of you.
This is what makes an elopement so special.
Catalonia is a wonderful destination for couples dreaming of a small, intimate wedding. From Mediterranean beaches and dramatic coastal landscapes to medieval villages, botanical gardens and peaceful lakes, this region offers an incredible variety of settings for a romantic celebration.
As a wedding photographer in Girona, Barcelona and the Costa Brava, I have the opportunity to discover beautiful places and photograph couples in some of the most picturesque corners of Catalonia.
If you are considering an elopement in Spain, here are some ideas to inspire you.

What Is an Elopement?
Traditionally, an elopement meant getting married secretly, often without guests or a large celebration. Today, the idea has evolved.
An elopement can be a wedding just for two, an intimate ceremony with a few close friends or family members, or a symbolic exchange of vows in a beautiful location.
There are no strict rules. You can organise a simple ceremony, spend the afternoon exploring a beautiful town, enjoy a romantic dinner overlooking the sea or combine your wedding with a little adventure.
The main idea is to create a day that feels personal, relaxed and completely yours.
Why Choose Catalonia for Your Elopement?
Catalonia offers an extraordinary variety of landscapes within relatively short distances.
You can exchange vows by the Mediterranean Sea in the morning, explore a medieval village in the afternoon and enjoy dinner in a beautiful countryside restaurant in the evening.
Here are some of the reasons why couples choose this part of Spain:
- Beautiful Mediterranean landscapes and spectacular coastal views.
- Charming medieval towns and historic architecture.
- Botanical gardens, vineyards, olive groves and countryside.
- A mild climate for much of the year.
- A combination of romantic locations and excellent gastronomy.
- Easy access from Barcelona Airport and Girona Airport.
Whether you prefer a beach ceremony, a countryside celebration or an intimate wedding in a historic town, Catalonia has plenty of possibilities.

5 Beautiful Places for an Elopement in Catalonia
The Costa Brava: A Wedding by the Mediterranean Sea
If you dream of exchanging vows with the sea in the background, the Costa Brava is one of the most beautiful destinations in Catalonia.
Its rocky coastline, hidden coves, turquoise water and spectacular viewpoints create a naturally romantic atmosphere.
You can choose a quiet beach, a coastal viewpoint or a private venue overlooking the Mediterranean.
The Costa Brava is particularly beautiful during the early morning and late afternoon, when the light is softer and the atmosphere is more peaceful.
For couples who love the sea, nature and outdoor celebrations, it is an ideal place for an intimate wedding.

Girona: Medieval Streets and Romantic Architecture
Girona is one of my favourite locations for romantic couple and wedding photography.
Its historic streets, stone architecture, picturesque squares and beautiful old bridges create an atmosphere that is difficult to find elsewhere.
The Old Town is perfect for a relaxed walk after your ceremony, with plenty of beautiful corners for photographs.
You can combine a civil or symbolic ceremony with a couple’s photoshoot through the historic centre, followed by a romantic dinner in one of the city’s restaurants.
Girona is also an excellent option for couples who want a destination wedding without travelling far from Barcelona.
Banyoles: A Peaceful Wedding by the Lake
If you prefer a quieter atmosphere surrounded by nature, Lake Banyoles is a wonderful option.
The lake, its reflections, green surroundings and beautiful walking paths create a peaceful setting for an intimate celebration.
It is especially lovely for couples who want natural, relaxed photographs without the crowds of more popular tourist destinations.
You can enjoy a walk by the water, exchange vows in a suitable private or permitted location and take beautiful portraits surrounded by nature.

Marimurtra Botanical Garden: A Romantic Mediterranean Setting
The Marimurtra Botanical Garden in Blanes is one of the most spectacular places for photography on the Costa Brava.
Its Mediterranean vegetation, exotic plants, terraces and panoramic sea views make it an exceptional setting for romantic portraits and intimate celebrations.
It is a particularly beautiful choice for couples who love botanical gardens and want a combination of nature, architecture and sea views.
Before planning a ceremony, check the garden’s current rules, availability and conditions for private events and professional photography.

Medieval Villages of Catalonia: A Fairytale Atmosphere
Catalonia is full of charming medieval villages with narrow stone streets, historic buildings and beautiful countryside surroundings.
Places such as Peratallada, Pals and Besalú are wonderful for couples who dream of a romantic European atmosphere.
Imagine walking through quiet streets together, stopping for photographs in beautiful little squares and enjoying a relaxed afternoon without rushing anywhere.
These locations are especially lovely for couples who want their elopement to feel like a little romantic escape.
Ideas for Your Intimate Wedding in Catalonia
An elopement gives you the freedom to organise your day differently from a traditional wedding.
Here are some ideas you might love:
Exchange your vows at sunrise.
A quiet beach or a beautiful viewpoint in the early morning can create an incredibly intimate atmosphere. You can enjoy the location before it becomes busy and take advantage of the soft morning light.
Plan a symbolic ceremony by the sea.
You do not necessarily need a large venue. A meaningful exchange of personal vows in a beautiful setting can become the most memorable part of your day.
Explore a medieval town together.
Instead of a traditional wedding schedule, spend the afternoon walking through the streets of Girona, Pals or Peratallada. Enjoy a coffee, discover beautiful corners and take photographs along the way.
Have a romantic dinner for two.
After the ceremony and photoshoot, reserve a table at a restaurant with a beautiful view or in a charming historic setting.
Combine your wedding with a short trip around Catalonia.
You can turn your elopement into a few days of travelling, discovering the Costa Brava, visiting medieval villages and enjoying the Mediterranean lifestyle.
What Is the Best Time of Year for an Elopement in Catalonia?
Catalonia is beautiful throughout the year, but each season offers a different atmosphere.
Spring (March–May)
Brings fresh greenery, flowers and pleasant temperatures. It is a lovely season for countryside locations and gardens.
Summer (June–August)
Offers long days, beautiful Mediterranean evenings and plenty of sunshine. However, popular beaches and tourist villages can become crowded, so sunrise or less popular locations are worth considering.
Autumn (September–November)
Is one of my favourite seasons for outdoor photography. The light becomes softer, the landscapes change colour and many locations become quieter after the summer season.
Winter (December–February)
Can be a wonderful choice for couples who prefer peaceful locations and a more intimate atmosphere. The weather is generally milder than in many other European destinations, although it is important to plan for possible rain and colder days.
How to Plan an Elopement in Catalonia
Even a small wedding requires a little planning, especially if you are travelling to Spain from another country.
Here are a few things to consider:
- Choose your location. Think about whether you prefer the sea, a historic town, a botanical garden or the countryside.
- Decide on the type of ceremony. A legal civil marriage and a symbolic ceremony have different requirements. Check the legal arrangements well in advance, especially if you are travelling from abroad.
- Choose the right time of day. Consider the light, temperature, privacy and visitor numbers at your chosen location.
- Plan your outfits. Choose something that reflects your personality and is comfortable for the location.
- Think about the photography. Allow enough time to enjoy the ceremony and take photographs without rushing.
- Leave some room for spontaneity. Not every minute needs to be planned. Some of the most beautiful moments happen naturally.
¿Why Is a Photographer Important for an Elopement?
An intimate wedding may have fewer guests and a simpler schedule, but that does not make the photographs any less important.
In fact, when there are only two of you, photographs often become the main way to share your experience with family and friends who could not be there.
A good elopement photographer does more than take portraits. They document the emotions, the atmosphere, the details and all those little moments that make your day unique.
My approach to wedding photography is natural and unobtrusive. I want couples to feel comfortable in front of the camera, enjoy their time together and forget about posing all the time.
I love combining genuine moments with beautiful couple portraits, using the natural surroundings and light to create photographs that feel personal and timeless.
