But how do you know whether a photographer is really the right person for you? What should you look for beyond a beautiful Instagram feed?

As a wedding photographer working in Girona, the Costa Brava and Barcelona, I would love to share some practical advice to help you make an informed decision and avoid unpleasant surprises.

How to Choose the Right Wedding Photographer: 10 Practical Tips to Avoid Making the Wrong Choice. Wedding photographer in Girona and Costa Brava| Evgenia Gruntovaya

1. Don’t just look at Instagram: ask to see full wedding galleries

This is probably one of the most important pieces of advice I can give you.

Instagram is a great place to discover photographers and get a feel for their style. However, remember that what you see there is usually a very small selection of their best images.

I strongly recommend asking your photographer to show you two or three complete galleries from real weddings, exactly as their clients receive them.

Why is this so important?

Because it allows you to see how the photographer performs throughout an entire wedding day, rather than judging their work based on ten or fifteen particularly beautiful photographs.

Look at the getting-ready moments, the ceremony, cocktail hour, couple portraits, guests, dinner and the party.

Is the quality consistent throughout the gallery? Can they capture spontaneous moments? How do they photograph guests? How do they handle changing lighting conditions?

A complete gallery will give you a much more realistic idea of what you can expect to receive.

2. Make sure the portfolio features real weddings

There is something I consider particularly important: knowing the difference between photographs from real weddings and images created during workshops or styled shoots.

Many photographers nowadays take part in workshops and editorial photoshoots. These sessions are specifically organised to create beautiful images. They often involve professional models, makeup artists, stylists, decorators, carefully selected flowers and lighting conditions prepared to achieve a particular result.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with these sessions. They can be a wonderful way for photographers to learn, experiment and develop their creativity.

However, photographing a styled shoot is very different from photographing a real wedding.

At an actual wedding, the lighting isn’t always perfect, schedules change, guests move around, unexpected situations happen and the photographer has to react quickly. There are no second takes when the ceremony, a special moment or an emotional reaction happens.

A beautiful photograph taken in controlled conditions doesn’t necessarily prove that someone can handle the same situation during a real wedding.

So don’t hesitate to ask whether the photographs in the portfolio come from real weddings. And, most importantly, ask to see complete galleries from those weddings.

3. Look at how they photograph people with similar physical characteristics to yours

This may not be something couples usually think about, but I believe it is extremely important.

Not every photographer approaches different body types, skin tones and physical characteristics in the same way.

For example, if you are a plus-size bride, look for photographs of other brides with a similar body type. Pay attention to how the photographer works with light, angles, posing and composition.

If you are an interracial couple or have noticeably different skin tones, look at how the photographer photographs couples with similar characteristics.

It is important that both of you feel represented and that the photographer knows how to work with different skin tones, especially in challenging lighting conditions.

You don’t need to find people who look exactly like you. What matters is seeing that the photographer has the experience, sensitivity and technical skills to photograph different people beautifully and naturally.

4. Check whether they have experience working at different venues and locations

It is certainly a bonus if your photographer already knows your wedding venue. Familiarity with a particular finca, masia or restaurant can be an advantage.

However, I would also recommend checking whether their portfolio includes weddings at different venues and in different environments.

Why?

Because photographing at the same location repeatedly, knowing every corner and understanding exactly how the light behaves there, is one thing. Being able to adapt to an unfamiliar environment is another.

Your wedding might take place at a countryside estate surrounded by gardens, on a Costa Brava beach, at a stone farmhouse, in a Barcelona city hotel or in a small medieval village in the Empordà.

Each location comes with its own challenges: direct sunlight, deep shadows, dark interiors, high ceilings or limited space.

An experienced photographer should be able to adapt and find creative solutions regardless of the venue.

5. Pay attention to how they work in different lighting conditions

Light is one of the most important elements in photography.

Not every wedding takes place in beautiful, soft golden-hour light. Some ceremonies happen at midday under strong sunlight, others take place indoors with very little natural light, and many receptions continue well into the night.

I recommend looking at photographs taken in different conditions:

  • Outdoor ceremonies in direct sunlight.
  • Portraits in the shade.
  • Indoor spaces with limited natural light.
  • Golden-hour photographs.
  • Evening receptions and parties.

A good photographer should know how to work with available light and adapt to the circumstances rather than relying exclusively on perfect conditions.

6. Make sure you love their editing style and that it is consistent

Don’t focus only on composition and the moments captured. Pay attention to the colours and editing as well.

Do you like the skin tones? Do the colours look natural? Do you prefer bright and airy images, warm tones, more contrast or a cinematic look?

Remember that your wedding photographs will be edited according to the photographer’s personal style.

Consistency is equally important. If you notice that the photographs on their website and Instagram look very different from one another, ask what you can expect your final gallery to look like.

Choose someone whose work you genuinely love as it is, rather than expecting them to completely change their editing style to match your preferences.

7. Choose someone you feel comfortable with

Your photographer will be close to you throughout one of the most personal and important days of your life.

They will be there during the preparations, the nervous moments, the emotions of the ceremony, hugs with your family and many other intimate situations.

That is why the personal connection matters so much.

Before booking, I recommend having a conversation, arranging a video call or meeting in person if possible.

Do they make you feel comfortable? Do you trust them? Do they listen to your ideas? Do they understand what you are looking for?

This is particularly important if you are not used to being in front of a camera. You need someone who can guide you naturally and help you feel relaxed rather than making you feel awkward or overly posed.

8. Ask about their equipment and backup options

Although photography depends much more on a photographer’s experience and creativity than on the camera itself, professional equipment does matter.

Ask what cameras they use, whether they have suitable lenses for different situations and, most importantly, whether they carry backup equipment.

What happens if a camera suddenly stops working during your ceremony?

A professional photographer should have a second camera, spare batteries, memory cards and other essential backup equipment.

It is also worth asking how your images are stored and backed up after the wedding.

It might seem like a technical detail, but it is directly related to protecting your memories.

9. Read the contract carefully and understand what is included

Don’t compare photographers based on price alone.

Two quotes might look similar but include completely different services.

Before booking, make sure you understand:

  • How many hours of coverage are included.
  • Approximately how many photographs you will receive.
  • Whether all delivered photographs will be edited.
  • The expected delivery time.
  • How and in what format you will receive your gallery.
  • Whether travel expenses are included.
  • What happens in case of illness or unforeseen circumstances.
  • The cancellation and booking conditions.

Everything should be clearly explained in a written contract.

It is also worth checking whether there are any limits on the number of photographs delivered or additional charges for accessing the complete gallery.

10. Remember that you are choosing someone to tell your story

Finally, my advice is not to choose your photographer based on one particular photograph or simply because their price seems attractive.

You are choosing the person who will document one of the most important days of your life.

Someone who needs to anticipate moments, notice little details, capture emotions and react to situations that cannot be repeated.

Look for a professional whose work genuinely moves you, whose photographic approach reflects your personality and with whom you feel you can simply be yourselves.

Because the best photographs are not necessarily the most perfectly posed or technically flawless ones. Sometimes they are the photographs that take you straight back to a particular moment and make you feel exactly what you felt on that day.

One last piece of advice from a wedding photographer

If you are planning your wedding in Girona, the Costa Brava or Barcelona and are looking for a photographer, take your time to explore different portfolios, ask questions and compare your options.

Never feel uncomfortable asking questions. It is your wedding day, and you have every right to know exactly what you are booking and what you can expect.

Above all, choose someone whose work you trust. On your wedding day, you should be able to relax, enjoy every moment and be fully present without constantly worrying about the photographs.

I wish you a wonderful wedding-planning journey and a day full of unforgettable memories!
